White Sands National Monument

Official US National Park Service Map and Brochure

It took all of two seconds looking at satellite imagery of the area to know this project was perfect for a bird's eye view. Obvious large-scale features, no tree cover, a large valley set against a mountain range—3D was the way to go.

Since the area had very little infrastructure to include, I was able to illustrate the dune formation process on the main map.

  • The biggest challenge was depicting the dunefield accurately and naturalistically. Luckily, I was available to find extremely detailed LIDAR data from an on-going dune movement study. I projected the dunes to match the 3D view and in the process greatly exaggerated their size so they would read at this scale. Using that image as source, I then painted in the dunefield by hand.
