I was flying "blind" on this design, so to speak: there was no work travel for the project, and I'd never been to the park or area before.
I filled in the gaps with a lot of research and careful study of existing maps and data. The topography of Isle Royale immediately jumped out: long, narrow ridges, valleys, and bays running in parallel the length of the island. The cause? A fascinating geologic story.
- The geology of Isle Royale is fascinating but complex. I created an isometric geologic diagram and wrote accompanying text in an attempt to convey a lot of information clearly and succinctly.
- To let the topography shine, I kept the relief simple. The tapered streams, feathered shorelines, and subtle bathymetry are my favorite features.
