Big Hole National Battlefield

The challenge with Big Hole, a small park located in Montana's Big Hole Valley, was to provide visitor orientation and tell a complicated battle story, all in one map.

After a number of iterations, I decided a realistic bird's eye view of the park would be the best way to meet both goals—and the most fun to look at.

If you ever have the chance, visit Big Hole and learn about this battle in particular and the history of the Nez Perce more generally. It's an important story.

  • All raster layers were projected into 3D in Natural Scene Designer. This included hillshades, texture shades, NHD streams, NLCD Landcover and Percent Tree Canopy, and NAIP aerial imagery. A lot of handdrawn detail work went into the final product—including placing each and every willow by hand.
  • Illustration of the battle was created in coordination with the park. As always, I pushed us to make it as simple and clear as possible.
